Libraries and homes – key campaigns this month

Southwark Action Alert                        9 October 2015

Southwark’s adjacent borough, Lambeth, is planning to close five libraries: Despite 1.3 million visits to the borough’s libraries last year, three libraries will be turned into gyms and five others converted into unstaffed ‘lounges’. Details of the protest lobby this Monday are shown below. You will also find details of several events relating to the demand for protection of council homes from private property developers.

Saturday 10 October
12-1pm. Stall organised by Southwark Defend Council Housing Campaign Outside Morrisons, Walworth Road, Opposite East Street. (Please note that the Peoples Housing Conference, planned for this date has been cancelled.)

Saturday 10 October

Monday 12 October

Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October
10am – 5pm. The Aylesbury estate Compulsory Purchase Order reconvenes in Arry's Bar at Millwall Football Ground, Zampa Road, London SE16 3LN. If you live on the Aylesbury and want to attend Aylesbury Tenants and Leaseholders First are arranging transport.

Tuesday 13 October
5pm. Trade Union Co-ordinating Group ‘Kill the Bill’ protest & rally –outside Parliament for protest then 6pm Committee Room 10 House of Commons for rally - Chair: Steve Gillan POA. Thursday 15 October
6.30pm. Public meeting: Homes for public need – not private greed with speakers from the European housing crisis coalition, anti-MIPIM campaigners and other campaigns for land and public infrastructure. At GMB office, 22 Stephenson Way, NW1 2HD. Facebook event here.

Saturday 17 October
12noon – 2pm. Join the Junior Doctors' London Protest, marching from Waterloo Place (off Pall Mall) to Parliament Square. Support them in their struggle against a new contract which would mean cuts in pay of around 30% and a huge increase in working hours.

Tuesday 20 October
7pm. Lambeth Keep Our NHS Public organising meeting in the White Lion pub, 232-4 Streatham High Road, SW16 1BB. (Note the change of day and venue this month.)

Wednesday 21 October
9am. Demonstration outside the property fair, MIPIM, at Olympia, Hammersmith Road, W14 8UX.  Organised by Radical Housing Network, supported by Housing Action in Southwark & Lambeth, Defend Council Housing and others. More details here.

Tuesday 27 October
7pm. Defend Council Housing meeting at the Alvey Estate Tenants Hall, ground floor of Thomson House, Beckway Street, off East Street, SE17 1TS. Beckway Street is close to the end of East Street at its junction with the Old Kent Road. More information from southwarkdch@gmail.com
