Campaign and Vote - against cuts and austerity

Southwark Action Alert                          26th April 2015

The NHS and housing are two issues that local campaigns are organising protests about this month.

Watch out for an electoral voice against cuts and austerity: hustings are a great opportunity to challenge those parties committed to cuts and austerity, and to hear from those candidates who are opposed to them. Details are shown below. If you know of hustings that aren’t listed, please email back to give us information about them.

Tuesday 28 April
10am.  Aylesbury CPO Inquiry - Southwark Council is trying to compulsorily purchase housing to make way for luxury housing built by Barratt homes. The schedule has not yet been produced, but first two days are likely to be Southwark Council presenting its case, with objectors following on third day. Venue: Millwall Conference Centre, the New Den, Zampa Road,SE16 3LN. Come along and join the campaigners. Find out more here.

Tuesday 28 April
7pm Southwark Defend Council Housing meeting at the Alvey Estate Tenants Hall, ground floor of Thomson House, Beckway Street, off East Street, SE17 1TS. Beckway Street is close to the end of East Street at its junction with the Old Kent Road. More information from southwarkdch@gmail.com

Saturday 2 May
12noon. Demonstration - Bring Back the NHS: a public service, open to everybody and free at the point of use. Opposition to closure of services in the Maudsley. Organised by Southwark Pensioners Action Group. Assemble outside King’s College Hospital. (If you are free at 9.30 on Friday 1 May at 9.30 come to the pensioners centre and help make some placards.)

7.30pm. Hustings for Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency. Venue: St James Bermondsey, Thurland Road SE16. Organised by Christians for Transformation in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe (C4T) but open to all. Details here.

Thursday 21 May
7pm. Lambeth Keep Our NHS Public organising meeting in the upstairs room at the Phoenix pub, 348 Clapham Road, SW9 9AR (between Clapham North and Stockwell tube stations). There is no Southwark KONP group so Southwark activists please make contact with the Lambeth group to find out about local activity. Saturday 20 June
National Demonstration and festival: END AUSTERITY NOW in London, just six weeks after the general election, the message to the new government will be to end austerity. Called by the People’s Assembly. Weblink here.
