Southwark Action Alert 6 November 2014

A lobby calling on Southwark Council to stand up for council housing and a strike by thousands of health workers across Southwark are two key protests this month. Conferences and organising meetings are also taking place every week to discuss and plan resistance to cuts and austerity. Full details below.

11am - 1pm. Leafleting and petitioning about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and NHS privatisation. Outside Stockwell tube (not Kennington Market as previously advertised). Monday 10th November
7pm-8.30pm. South London People’s Assembly organising meeting at Bread & Roses pub, 68 Clapham Manor St, London SW4 6DZ, planning work around local campaigns, and feedback on the last Assembly.

Saturday 15 November
11am-4pm. ‘Striking together - organising to win’ national conference. Workshops: After the health strikes, where next for the fight to save the NHS? The fight against zero hours contracts and organising the unorganised (Hosted by BFAWU), Migrant workers: Part of the union, part of the solution (Hosted by BARAC), Benefit justice: Stop the Tories war on the poor (Hosted by DPAC and Benefit Justice Campaign), Campaigning for rejection of the local government pay proposal. Tuesday 18 November
3pm. ‘Stand up for council housing’ Lobby of Southwark Council Cabinet meeting at the Council's Offices, 160 Tooley Street SE1. Called by Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations. SGTO has also organised a deputation to present the ‘Six Alternative Pledges’ to the Council's Cabinet.

Wednesday 19 November
12noon. National Student Demonstration - No Fees, No Cuts, No Debt! Assemble at Malet Street at around 12noon and march round Russell Square, down Kingsway to the Strand, and then to Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and ending at Parliament by 4pm. Thursday 20 November
7pm. Lambeth Keep Our NHS Public organising meeting in Phoenix Pub, 348 Clapham Road, Stockwell, SW9 9AR (between Clapham North and Stockwell stations). Please note there is no Southwark KONP group so Southwark activists please make contact with this group to find out about local activity.

Monday 24 November
7am-11am. Health unions’ four hour strike over pay. Unions taking part: Unison, Unite, GMB, Royal College of Midwives (RCM), Society of Radiographers (SOR), UCATT, POA, Occupational Therapists (BAOT), Dietetic Association (BDA), and Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association. 7pm. Meeting of Southwark Defend Council Housing campaign in the Parish Office at St John’s Church, Larcom Street, SE17 1NQ. Map. Agenda to include plans for building for a London-wide demonstration in January.

Monday 1 December
6pm – 8.00 pm. Public meeting: Trade Unions Against TTIP. Venue: Diskus Centre, Unite Central Office, 128 Theobalds Road, Holborn, WC1X 8TH. Organised by the Campaign for Trade Union freedom. Facebook event here.
