Southwark Council meets on Wednesday to confirm its Council Tax and budget for 2013-4. Not only will this mean more closure of services and community organisations but it also heralds draconian attacks on thousands of Southwark tenants and benefit claimants. A protest demonstration THIS WEDNESDAY (see below) will call on the Council not to impose the bedroom tax and cuts to benefits. Also that they refuse to evict residents who fall in arrears because of these cuts. Come and join us: 6 pm at the Council Offices, 161 Tooley Street SE1.

Protest against budget cuts, oppose the bedroom tax, cuts in council-tax benefit and eviction threats to benefit claimants.   Assemble outside Southwark Council Assembly for Budget/Council Tax. Lobby against the Council budget cuts

Hi Everyone

 

Wednesday’s Organising meeting is an important one for us because we have jointly called a lobby of the Council with Southwark TUC against the Council’s cuts budget for 2013-14. Already the local Nurseries Campaign is organising to lobby the meeting. We are in contact with Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations and Southwark UNISON and NUT branches who we hope will be supporting the lobby too, plus local anti-cuts groups, pensioners etc.

 

We have only 10 days to get the message out as widely as possible. Please come on Wednesday and bring your ideas and enthusiasm!

We will also be discussing the Fire Stations campaign, the Health service campaign -  where big meetings and demos recently show a wider scale of opposition to these cuts.

Alert: A new year of massive cuts to come in Southwark

This year, there will be further swingeing cuts to Southwark Council’s services, plus increases to rents and other charges. This comes on top of cuts in real terms of £90 million in the past two years. Also, in April the government’s welfare reform agenda will really kick in. Southwark Action Alert

The huge demonstration in Lewisham recently against the threatened closure of the A+E Ward shows the depth of support for vital local services. Meanwhile, George Osborne’s Autumn Statement this week shows that we face at least six more years of austerity, and included an extra 2% cut to Southwark Council’s budget next year. Local campaigns are organising against new cuts to nurseries, to fire stations and to health services. There are plenty of planning meetings and protest events – come along and get involved!
